“XXV you don’t have to do this.”
“Yes I do.”
YVK was standing against the door of the airlock, as straight and stiff as if she were facing a firing squad. Which in a sense, she was. She looked pleadingly at her old friend.
“Please. You’re not like them. How did it come to this?”
“Yes I am. And you know perfectly well how, Subversive.”

There was a buzz about the place that night for sure. Everyone was gathered in the Grand Hall, sipping drinks and chattering excitedly. XXV was smiling and glancing a little shyly around him, having been led in along with the rest of his class. Everyone on the Mothership was there, from the lowliest drone to the Director (apparently, anyway – nobody had actually seen him). But there was only one person XXV was interested in seeing, and she was proving as hard to spot as the Director. Along that same train of thought, he quickly drained his drink and hurried off to the bathroom.

“YVK, where are you?”
XXV charged down the corridor, yelling at the top of his voice. He hadn’t long been out of the daycare centre, and he and his friend had already got into one of their games, which had already got them into enough trouble with the nurses. It didn’t take Rufus long to get used to his new environment. He was in his element, up to his eyes in reports and samples. He had bored his friends and relatives half to death with regular telephone updates on what the pack was doing – apart from Jake, who rarely let him get a word in edgeways (He had forgiven his brother for leaving and the two were thick as thieves again).

“Ride into the danger zone!”
Rufus threw his head out of the car window, basking in the bright morning sunshine as he sang along at the top of his lungs. He was revelling in the marvellous, two day pocket of freedom between leaving home and starting his new job. For the first time in his life he had nothing to worry about at all: his mother and Jake were safe at home, and in just a few hours he would be embarking upon the career he had always dreamed of. It seemed like nothing could go wrong, at least until he felt his truck gently begin to swerve to the side. He ducked his head back inside and scrabbled to get a hold of the wheel.
“Danger indeed,” he remarked to himself, steering back onto the path.
